Glow of the molten lava - Halema`uma`u crater, Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii
The light from the hot molten lava (which we cannot see) illuminates the gas above, giving rise to a distinct glow. This is visible from several outlooks, especially the Jaggar Museum. The museum was so crowded that we couldn't go there, so we went to a nearby outlook. The glow is spectacular to view at night. Definitely recommended if you go to the Volcanoes National Park.
Surf's up. At the beach in Kailua-Kona, Big Island, Hawaii
A snapshot of the beach from the village of Kailua-Kona, on the Big Island of Hawaii. The beach consists of basaltic rocks giving the characteristic black color. In the distance you can see people parasailing or riding in boats. The waves crashing on to the shore add some drama to the picture, and I really like the heart-shaped rock in the foreground.
Pond in Pu`uhonua o Honaunau, Big Island, Hawaii
The Pu`uhonua o Honaunau was a place of refuge for defeated warriors, noncobatants in wartime, and those who broke religious laws. As long as they were within this place of refuge, they could not be touched, according to our guide. Its a beautiful secluded walled place.
The reflections of the palm trees in the water really makes this picture.
